Lou's Place in COAG discussion

9 Dec 2015

Lou's Place CEO, Deborah Banks, took part in a national roundtable discussion for The Council of Australian Governments (COAG) Advisory Panel on reducing violence against women and their children in November.

She was invited as a NSW representative from specialist domestic violence services and refuges.

Held at the Commonwealth Parliamentary Offices in Sydney, the discussion focused on housing and Safe at Home models of support for women and their children.

Initiatives to help keep women safe at home and changes to tenancy legislation to support women were among topics discussed. Successful initiatives to support perpetrators to leave the home were raised as perpetrator homelessness can contribute to an escalation of violence.

Deborah coined the term "DV Doula," a highly skilled domestic violence specialist who could work alongside a woman experiencing domestic violence, providing emotional support, presenting all her options and linking her with the agencies of her choice.

Deborah proposed that the panel consider other models of support to help couples who are willing to work together to stop domestic violence and keep the family unit together.
