Lou’s Place is a low-barrier, community-based drop-in centre for women.

Our approach is built around a simple but important idea: support should be easy to access, flexible, and shaped around each woman’s needs.

Women do not need an appointment, a referral, or a clear plan before coming to Lou’s. They can arrive as they are — whether they need a meal, a shower, a conversation, connection, casework, advocacy, or simply a safe place to be.

We know that accessing support is not always straightforward. Many women face long wait times, strict eligibility criteria, complex systems, or the need to repeat their story across multiple services. Lou’s Place is designed to reduce these barriers wherever possible.

What Low-Barrier Support Means at Lou’s

Low-barrier support means women can access Lou’s in ways that feel safe, manageable, and right for them.

At Lou’s:

  • no appointment is required
  • no referral is needed
  • there is no cost
  • women can arrive as they are
  • women do not need to share their story before they are ready
  • women can choose how and when they engage with support
  • support can be practical, emotional, social, short-term or ongoing

Lou’s Place welcomes anyone who identifies as a woman and supports women from all walks of life. This may include women experiencing homelessness, domestic and family violence, contact with the justice system, mental health challenges, alcohol and other drug use, financial hardship, isolation, and other complex life circumstances.

Women do not need to have everything figured out before walking through the door. They do not need to be in crisis, have formal supports in place, or already be connected with other services to come to Lou’s.

Low-barrier support does not mean there are no boundaries. Lou’s maintains clear expectations to support the safety of the space and community, but those boundaries are not designed to create unnecessary barriers to support.

Support That Grows With Each Woman

Support at Lou’s does not follow a set pathway. It grows with each woman, in her own time.

For some women, support begins with meeting immediate needs — a meal, a shower, laundry, clothing, or a safe place to be. For others, it may begin through joining an activity, connecting with other women, or simply becoming familiar with the space.

Over time, women may choose to engage in different ways. This might include speaking with a case worker, joining a group program, attending an on-site clinic, accessing advocacy, or being connected with other services.

As trust builds, support may become more ongoing. Women may work towards goals such as housing stability, safety, health, wellbeing, family connection, or navigating legal, financial or government systems.

Support is not linear. Women may come once, return regularly, step away, or reconnect later. Stepping away, returning in crisis, missing appointments, or finding it hard to engage does not automatically mean a woman does not want support. Lou’s remains a consistent place women can return to when they need support.

Connection and Community

Lou’s Place is more than a service. It is a community.

Connection is central to the way Lou’s works. Many women who come to Lou’s have experienced isolation, instability, trauma, exclusion, or systems that have been difficult to navigate. Lou’s provides a space where women can connect with others, share space, reduce isolation, and experience a sense of belonging.

Community is built through everyday moments — sharing a meal, joining an activity, having a conversation, being welcomed by name, or knowing there is somewhere familiar to return to.

For some women, connection and belonging may be just as important as practical support.

Why Our Approach Works

Lou’s Place works because it starts with relationship, not requirements.

Women are met with dignity, respect and care. They do not need to have everything figured out before they walk through the door, and they do not need to engage in a particular way to be welcome.

By making support easier to access, Lou’s creates space for trust to build over time. Some women need practical help straight away. Others need time to feel safe, build connection, or simply be in the space before taking another step.

What begins as a place to meet immediate needs can become a pathway to longer-term support — at each woman’s pace, in her own way.

Our approach is grounded in the understanding that women are the experts in their own lives. We walk alongside women, supporting them to make choices, build connection, access opportunities, and move forward in ways that feel possible for them.
